Outdoor School Information
Dear Sixth Grade Families,
This spring I will be taking the sixth grade students to Outdoor School. This is a tremendous science learning opportunity. Students are at Outdoor School for one week, and while there, they live in cabins with students from other schools and high-school student leaders. As you might imagine, Outdoor School is outdoor, hands-on, highly engaging learning. If you would like more information about Outdoor school, please check out their website at: http://www.mesd.k12.or.us/os/OutdoorSchool/Welcome.html.
If your child is on free or reduced lunch, Outdoor School is free. If not, the cost is $100 per child. If you are not sure if your family qualifies for free or reduced lunch, I encourage you to fill out a free/reduced lunch form and double check. Even if your child never eats hot lunch at school, it will mean your child could go to Outdoor School for free.
Last year, our entire class participated in a read-a-thon, and together we raised enough money for everyone to go for free! This year, in October, we will be conducting this year’s read-a-thon. Basically, students collect pledges for every page they read, and then we spend two weeks reading at school. However, this year students also have the opportunity to participate in an Outdoor School bank. A letter will come home this week about this opportunity.
Although it is my goal that every student attend Outdoor School since it is part of the Portland Public Schools science curriculum, I understand that is not always possible. School will continue while we are at Outdoor School, and students who do not attend Outdoor School are expected to come to school.
In order to move forward in our planning and fundraising, the attached form must be signed and returned by all families. Please keep this letter for your information, and return only the attached form by Wednesday, September 12, 2007. If you need to download a new copy of the form you may do so here.
Thank you for your support! We look forward to a wonderful Outdoor School experience!
