Afghan Feast for Grandparent’s and Special Friend’s Day!

On Friday we had a wonderful feast of Afghan meatballs, chicken and beef kabobs, rice, nan, and rote (sweet pastry). Students and special friends acted as food critics and rated each dish. The chicken and rice rated quite high, although reviews were mixed.

Storyline recap…

This past week students had long discussions about imprisonment…What are the things, ideas, places, and events that imprison you and what are those things that set you free? They created wonderful self-portraits in a surrealist style to represent some of those ideas.

Kindergarten Buddies

This year, the sixth and seventh graders have teamed up with Jules and Deb’s Kindergarteners as our buddies! On Friday, we met for the first time and just played together as each buddy group got to know each other. I think the sixth and seventh graders forgot how active the kindergarteners were, as throughout the afternoon I saw several sixth and seventh graders just lying down on the playground! I am looking forward to a wonderful year together!

Tillamook State Forest Visitor Center Field Trip

We had a wonderful time at the Tillamook State Forest Visitor Center. We spent the day outside, learning about watersheds and collecting microorganisms and analyzing the stream health!

Homework and Today’s special events!

Journal 6 has been assigned, and is due on Tuesday for the seventh graders and on Wednesday for the sixth graders.

Today we met with our Kindergarten buddies in Jules and Deb’s room. We met and spent time getting to know each other today. We are looking forward to reading, doing art, writing, and going on at least one field trip together!

Today was also Grandparent’s and Special Friends Day! We were treated to an Afghan feast! We tasted many traditional foods including chicken kabobs, meatballs, spinach, lentils, green peas, and nan. Students and guests rated each dish as they acted as food critics! I will post pictures and our favorites soon.

Read-a-thon

Read-a-thon permission slips are due TODAY, Wednesday, October 3rd! This fundraiser helps all students, even if your child is able to attend Outdoor School for free. Please help us in getting them all returned!

Free and Reduced Lunch

All students who are receiving free or reduced price meal benefits at the end of last year must complete a new family meal application. Students who do not have a new approved meal application will have to pay full price beginning Thursday, October 4th!

If you need a new form, please let me know. Also, this is very important because any sixth grade student who qualifies will be able to attend Outdoor School for free in the spring. Our school also receives some benefits based on how many students qualify, so please take a moment to see if you qualify.

Thanks!

Conferences will be done round-robin style in the cafeteria, so there won’t be sign-ups, but you will have the opportunity to get more information about the times. If you are not available, I will also send this information home and post it here.
